About

Hello! I’m Cristin, and I tutor reading and writing using a creative, uplifting approach. I love using movement and games — many of them drawn from my theater and improvisation training — to jump-start student focus and engagement.

I’m based in Seattle. Currently, I’m tutoring and teaching classes online only due to COVID-19. If your child could use some extra support with remote learning this year, I’d love to help! Whenever possible, I use movement and games as screen breaks during online sessions.

Education

In addition to being an expert on silly faces, I have some formal education:

  • Certificate in Editing, University of Washington
  • Certificate in Writing for Children, University of Washington
  • JD, University of Arizona Rogers College of Law
  • BA in Political Science, summa cum laude, University of Notre Dame

Writing Experience

I was an attorney in a past life, so I’m passionate about teaching reading, writing, and critical thinking skills.

I have more than 15 years of professional and academic writing experience. Thanks to my work at a variety of publications, I’ve edited restaurant reviews, academic journal articles, a YA novel about a shape-shifting witch, and everything in between. You can view my online writing portfolio here.

My favorite thing I’ve ever written? A Star Trek fan-fiction script in which the Enterprise crew rescued Jon Bon Jovi from a hostile planet. (To my surprise, Hollywood has yet to call and offer to make this into a feature film.)

Movement Experience

I left full-time lawyering to pursue a multi-hyphenate career as a teacher-writer-theater artist. Since 2017, I’ve taught Fletcher Pilates — a form of classical Pilates that pairs specific breathwork with movement.

I do my acting training at Freehold Theatre in Seattle. Some of my favorite roles include Tock in The Phantom Tollbooth, Wolfington (a vegetarian wolf who loves smoked peanuts) in The Fluffy Tale of Adventure, an Ensemble member in Wit at SecondStory Repertory, and The Fairy Goudamother in When You Wish Upon A Pizza by The 14/48 Projects.

Viola Spolin’s theater games are the foundation of my Theater Games and Story Theater classes. I’ve practiced these games with sidecoaching from many awesome improvisation teachers, including Aretha Sills.

Wild Dog Management Experience

My main hobby is getting pulled around my neighborhood by Edna Mode, my uber-excited corgi.
