Ways to Read Along

Here are some options for all kinds of reading and moving humans:

(1) Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland — The O.G.!

Emerging readers might try (2) Alice In Wonderland in Words of One Syllable, adapted by Mrs. J.C. Gotham.

Still younger readers might prefer (3) The Nursery Alice, an abridged version adapted by Carroll himself. It was intended, wrote Carroll, “to be read by Children aged from Nought to Five. To be read? Nay, not so! Say rather to be thumbed, to be cooed over, to be dogs’-eared, to be rumpled, to be kissed . . .”  I mean, when you put it that way!

All three of these are available to view and download for free from Project Gutenberg.

I love this book as a read-aloud for children, but some kids might find its absurdity to be too scary. Luckily, there are TONS of adaptations available — including this beautifully illustrated board book from Carly Gledhill (4).

I’ve fallen in love with my new copy — it contains Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland as well as Through the Looking-Glass, “lavishly illustrated with interactive elements” by Minalima (5).
